Sandwich Harbour is a jewel on the desolate 1570km coastline of Namibia. To reach it, one has to brave a stretch of coast where huge red dunes fall steeply into the ocean. Here the state of the tide is critical and departure times have to be adjusted accordingly. The lagoon area teems with fish in the spawning season and this attracts a great variety of shorebirds. The underground fresh water is at shallow depth and this enables a variety of plants to grow, providing shelter and nest sites. It is a photographer’s dream. Early seafarers filled up their fresh water supplies here and the remains of fishing enterprises and even a beef canning factory are buried beneath the ever shifting dunes. This excursion will also show you the town of Walvis Bay, marine salt production, wetlands of global importance, treasurers’ salt pans and of course a short excursion into the vast sea of dunes is included.
