Rugged yet fragile, barren but beautiful, haunting Namibia is an undiscovered wilderness that epitmises the magic of Africa. Vast tracts of land featuring the country’s major habitat types are represented in a network of conservation areas. Large number of game species are abundant in the many parks and include large mammals like the elephant, rhino, giraffe and buffalo, as well as the big cats - lion, leopard and cheetah. Namibia is richly endowed with bird life. More than 630 of the 887 bird species listed for Southern Africa are recorded in Namibia, of which about 500 breed locally. An extra dimension of interest is found in the extraordinary way that animal, plant and indeed human populations have adapted to survive in Namibia’s dry climate, typical of a semi-desert country where droughts are a regular occurrence. A very distinct example is the desert plant known as the Welwitschia mirabilis, endemic to the Namib Desert and one of the oldest plants known to man. There are approximately 200 endemic plant species and more than 120 different trees growing in the country.
