16 Days Guided Self-Drive Adventure Safari – Namibia / Botswana

This tour is geared towards the more adventurous guest. The journey ventures deep into the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta and to some of the most remote places Namibia has to offer. From the Chobe riverfront to the Horseshoe Lagoon on the Kwando River. There exist ample opportunities to meet and mingle with the different cultures like the San Bushmen of the Kalahari or the Mafwe people of the Shashi River. On this trip the real off-road driving experience can take place with a fully equipped 4x4 vehicle. A qualified guide and safari team will ensure a safe but memorable trip. Sit by the campfire and listen to the sounds of the African bush, while the safari team prepares a delicious dinner.

Arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport. After a warm welcome by the guide and safari team savor the scenic drive into Windhoek. If fortunate wildlife may be spotted. In Windhoek a briefing about the 4x4 camping vehicle will take place. After all the formalities have been done, the adventure begins. The first drive is in the east direction towards the border of Botswana to the Farm Elandsbult. Here camp will be set up for the first time. After a strenuous journey a nice sundowner drink can be enjoyed by the open camp fire.

Campsite Kalahari Bush Breaks (Lunch and Dinner included)

The days escapade begins with traveling out of Namibia via the Buitepos Border Post. All paperwork regarding the vehicles will be done by the safari team. The next town of Ghanzi lies amidst huge cattle farms of western Botswana. The journey for the day ends at The Dqae Qare Game Farm which was donated by the Dutch government to the Bushmen community living in the area. This successful project gives guest a chance to learn about the culture of the San. After dinner there will be exciting traditional dancing and storytelling around the fire.

Campsite Dqae Qare Game Farm (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

After breakfast a bush walk with the San Bushmen is arranged to learn about the use of plants and trees in the Kalahari. The San are also true masters in tracking and they will show you a few tricks in how to follow the spoor of an animal. On the way to Maun the drive will go through typical Kalahari bush veld. In Maun optional bookings for a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta to get a birds-eye view of the largest inland delta in the world can be made. The day ends at Audi Camp which lies on the banks of the Thamalakane River just north of Maun. This is the last stop before civilization is left behind and the “real” Africa is entered at Moremi Game Reserve.

Campsite Audi Camp (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

Travel north through small picturesque villages. After reaching South Gate campsite the first game drive through the reserve towards Xini lagoon will take place. All along the flood plains during late afternoon many animals will be coming to drink. The guide will lead the way back to the camp. An exciting night listening to the sounds of the African bush will end the day. This is nature at its best.

South Gate Campsite (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

After having enjoyed a nice hearty breakfast the journey goes deeper into the reserve. There may be opportunities to see elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe. Various antelope species will be seen and if very fortunate even lions or a leopard will be spotted. The roads are basically just rough tracks that are adjusted with the rise of the floodwater in the rainy season. Off road driving does not get much better than this. Mopane and riverine forests line the waterways and channels, the lifelines of this huge oasis. After crossing a couple of dodgy bridges the Third Bridge Camp Site will be reached. Here enjoy the prolific birdlife the delta has to offer.

Third Bridge Campsite (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

Today the tour will pass through the Xakanaxa area that is known for its game viewing. An African painted dog previously known as the wild dog may be seen. After stopping at “Hippo Pools” to have a look at the hippos that have made this pool of permanent water their home, the reserve will be exited through North Gate. The next campsite lies just north of the Khwai River and is home to many vervet monkeys.

Khwai Campsite (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

Today’s drive goes along the Khwai River to Mababe Gate the southern entrance to Chobe National Park. This park was founded in 1967 and was named after the river that forms the parks northern border. Chobe is famous for its elephants, which will be encountered along the way. The drive to Savuti along the Magwikwhe sand ridge is quite trying on both vehicle and driver. The safari team will always be there should the vehicle get stuck in thick sands. Lions love the area along the Savuti marshes and can often be seen hunting on these plains.

Savuti Campsite (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

Say goodbye to the Savuti area through Goha Gate and follow the sandy tracks through the Chobe Forest Reserve. The next stop is Chobe Safari Lodge which lies between the town of Kasane and the Chobe National Park on the banks of the Chobe River. From the deck at the lodge there is a wonderful view over the flood plains. An optional afternoon boat cruise along the Chobe River offers excellent game viewing opportunities.

Chobe Safari Lodge Campsite (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

The vehicles will stay at the campsite and there will be a transfer into Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls. The Ndebele call this place “Mosi-oa-Tunya” the smoke that thunders. The falls were named by Sir David Livingstone who was the first European to set eyes on this magnificent natural wonder. On a walk through the rain forest along the falls dramatic views into the gorge can be admired. After lunch there will be transfer back to Kasane.

This part of the Bwabwata National Park is famous for its large elephant herds that come to drink by the river. Lions, wild dogs and leopards can be seen in this area frequently.
