14 Days Guided Self-Drive Adventure Safari – Kaokoveld

The rugged and wild Kaokoveld is every adventurers dream. Through its secluded geographical location in Namibia’s far north-western corner, it offers a glimpse of the real, untouched Africa. This guided safari offers to see most of the beautiful landscapes Kaokoveld has to offer. An experienced guide and safari team will insure a safe and enjoyable safari. The Kaokoveld is known to be the home of the Himba, a nomadic tribe living in these arid regions. Also the legendary desert adapted elephants call the Kaokoveld their home. Here Africa’s last great wilderness can be found where rhinos, elephants and lions still roam freely outside a controlled conservation area.

DAY 1

ROUTE

Arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport. After a warm welcome by the guide and safari team savor the scenic drive into Windhoek. If fortunate wildlife may be spotted. In Windhoek a briefing about the 4x4 camping vehicle will take place. After all the formalities have been done, the adventure begins. The drive starts northwards over huge tracts of farmland to Otjiwa Safari Lodge near Otjiwarongo. The campsites lie beneath giant acacia trees near a dry riverbed.

OVERNIGHT

Otjiwa Safari Lodge Campsite (Lunch and dinner included)

DAY 2

ROUTE

The journey today leads through small settlements such as Otjiwarongo, Outjo and Kamanjab towards the north-western part of the country. At Kamanjab the paved roads are left behind and we travel through the Khowarib Gorge. Here the perennial Hoanib River flows steady throughout the year. This route offers beautiful scenery while thoroughly testing the vehicles off-road capabilities. The very sandy route demands full attention from the driver. Should the vehicle get stuck in the sand, the safari team will assist in the towing of the vehicle. Today will be the first night of camping “wild”; the guide will look for a suitable campsite.

OVERNIGHT

Wildernesscamp Khowarib Schlucht (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 3

ROUTE

After breakfast a bush walk with the San Bushmen is arranged to learn about the use of plants After packing up make sure that the site is left as it was found. The drive follows the Hoanib until Khowarib Campsite is reached. The Ongongo waterfall can be found a bit further to the north. Here swimming can be enjoyed in the natural pool hidden by wild fig trees below the falls or hiking in the nearby surroundings. Warmquelle is a small settlement where the German settlers used the spring water to plant crops and fruit during the colonial era.

OVERNIGHT

Khowarib Campsite (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 4

ROUTE

Through Warmquelle with its century old fig-trees the journey continues to Sesfontein (six springs) to replenish our fuel supplies. The old German fort has been converted into a tourist lodge. After a short drive from Sesfontein the road turns into a rocky and bumpy track, which will be followed until the Hoanib riverbed is reached. The dry riverbed consists of very sandy, as well as muddy terrain, both of which should be avoided. The guide will safely assist you through this area. A variety of fauna can be found in the Hoanib area. On some rare occasions one might even spot the illusive desert adapted elephants. In the late afternoon the guide will point out all the sights and sounds of this particular ecosystem via a short hike in the riverbed. A welcomed change to the long hours spent sitting in the vehicle. The night will be spent on the banks of the Hoanib.

OVERNIGHT

Wilderness camp Hoanib River (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 5

ROUTE

Today the travel goes through the ancient Kaokoveld where, legend has it, witches danced during the midnight hour and so formed the circles of barren ground that are spread throughout the area known as fairy or witch circles. The destination today is Purros, which sets itself apart from the rest due to its perennial waters. The Hoarusib River contains vast underground water resources, which cause the growth of grass and expansive trees in the area. Wildlife in the area includes giraffes, springbok, Oryx and on rare occasions elephants.

OVERNIGHT

Purros Campsite (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 6

ROUTE

Travel still further north through the hills and rocky landscapes of the Kaokoveld. The most rugged parts of the terrain can only be traversed at minimal speeds. Near the border of the Skeleton Coast Park the scenery becomes desolate and lonesome. This is exactly why it is even more impressive to see a lone Oryx or giraffe making its way through it. Tonight take in the wonders that Africa has to offer as camp is set up under the stars near Sanitatas.

OVERNIGHT

Wildernesscamp Sanitatas (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 7

ROUTE

Today you are driving to the Epupa Falls of the Kunene River. This route leads through the regional capital of the Kunene region Opuwo. The Kunene not only forms the border to Angola but is also one of the truly perennial rivers in Namibia. Winding its way through the rough, arid landscape like a giant green serpent. The shaded Omarunga Camp lies approximately 300 m upstream of the Epupa Falls directly on the river bank under the great Makalani palms.

OVERNIGHT

Omarunga Campsite (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 8

ROUTE

A whole day to spend at Epupa Falls. Here you take a tour to one of the surrounding Himba villages with a local guide. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the culture and traditions of this ancient nomadic tribe which are apparent at first glance of their appearance. The core of the ability to retain their traditional methods of living lies in the remoteness of the Kaokoveld. In the afternoon, after a short hike up one of the surrounding hills, a unique view of the falls awaits.

OVERNIGHT

Omarunga Campsite (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 9

ROUTE

Today starts with passing through sandy rivers, over rocky hills and past villages on our way to Kunene River Lodge. Situated near Swartbooisdrift, where the Dorslandtrekkers crossed the Kunene into Angola with their ox wagons in the 19th century on their quest for land. Kunene River Lodge offers activities such as rafting, quad biking or fishing.

OVERNIGHT

Kunene River Lodge (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 10

The drive along the river leads to Ruacana waterfall. Here a third of the entire countries electricity is produced by a hydro-electric power plant. Heading south finally reached is the western border of the Etosha National Park. Spend the night near the border of the Park.

OVERNIGHT

Wildernesscamp Etosha (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

DAY 11

ROUTE

Enter the world-famous Etosha National Park through the western Galton gate. Drive through the park on the look out for lions, elephants, the eland and the damara dik-dik (the largest and the smallest antelope respectively), giraffes and many more. Before sunset we leave the park and make our way to Etosha Safari Camp.

In the morning a city tour with a visit to the suburb of Katutura is scheduled.
