HALF DAY TOUR: CAPE CROSS TOUR (09:00 - 13:00 / 13:00-17:00)
After picking you up at your accommodation the tour departs Swakopmund in a northerly direction to the 130 km distant peninsular of Cape Cross. Along the route you will stop to marvel at the extensive lichen fields stretching to the horizon, east of the coastal road. Another place of interest before you reach the holiday town of Hentie’s Bay is the “Free Republic of Wlotzka’s Baken”, some 40 km north of Swakopmund. This self-sustaining settlement of wooden built houses and bungalows on the beach is the haven of many a beach angler. Once you have passed the town of Hentie’s Bay, the road will lead past the salt pans where rock salt is being mined and refined. Your guide will introduce you to the intricacies of salt crystals and saline algae, which can be found here abundantly. The Cape Cross peninsular is of both historical and ecological significance, as it is the site of one of the first landings by European seafarers. It is also the home of 100 000 Cape fur seals. It was here that Diego Cao stepped foot on land and erected a stone cross in honor of a safe sea voyage from Portugal in 1486. Your guide will give you detailed explanations on the seal colony while highlighting the historical endeavors of early settlers, who mined guano here. After your tour you will head back towards Swakopmund where you shall be dropped where you please. End of tour.
