FULL DAY TOUR: CAPE CROSS & MESSUM CRATER COMBO TOUR (07:30 - 17:00)

You will be collected at your accommodation at 08h00 and travel 130 km in a northerly direction to the famous Cape Cross which is home to up to 100 000 Cape fur seals. Your guide will give you detailed information about the seal colony and will highlight the historic significance since it is here, where the Portuguese seafarer Diego Cao landed in 1486 and erected a stone cross in honor of a safe journey. Your journey moves on to the Messum crater where you will be enlightened on geology, landscape and the abundance of the famous Welwitchia Mirabilis plants. You will also have the chance to see lichens and different other plants which have adapted themselves to survive in the dry desert environment. Your guide will then serve you a refreshing lunch in a shady spot. On your way back to Swakopmund you will pass a coastal fishermen’s town known as Hentie’s Bay, as well as the “Free Republic of Wlotzkas Baken”, a small self-sustaining settlement of wooden cabins and bungalows on the beach. At the saltpans where marine salt is mined and refined, your guide will introduce you to the fascination of salt crystals and saline algae and will allow some time for you to marvel over the flamingoes as well as other shore birds. The tour ends in Swakopmund at your accommodation around 17h00.
